I am from Birmingham, Alabama and currently live in Huntsville, Alabama.
Education… I graduated from the University of Montevallo with Bachelor of Music degrees in Choral Music Education and Vocal Performance. I also received the Master of Music Education degree with emphasis in Choral Conducting from The Florida State University.
Currently, I am the choral music director at Buckhorn Middle School and Buckhorn High School a part of the Madison County School System. I also serve as the Treble Chorale Director, a vocal ensemble for unchanged voices for grades 6-8 for the Huntsville Community Chorus Association. For over ten years, I have served in some capacity of many church music programs; directing adult, children’s, and youth choirs and ensembles. Music has been a constant in my life since I was a child. It plays a great role in my life as I get to have many musical experiences with other great musicians, children and adults alike.
Most treasured music-related accomplishment or accolade… There are so many as I have had an incredible musical career throughout college and teaching. I would have to say taking my chamber choir to sing at the Alabama State Capitol. We had the opportunity to sing for legislators, the governor, and the State Superintendent of Education.
Future musical endeavors… I hope to continue training middle and high school choirs. My biggest endeavor would be to start a community children’s choral program or fine arts supervisor/director.
Favorite memory involving musical performance or study… Again, so many to name and choose from. I loved being a part of the University of Montevallo’s Opera Ensemble production of the Mikado during my junior year. The show was so much fun to work on.
Favorite piece you have ever played/sung… Too many to name, but I really enjoyed getting to sing and perform German lieder. It is such a beautiful language that was set to very meaningful music.
Words of encouragement or advice do you have for students studying music today… Keep going! Being a music major is not easy, but so worth it from the experiences and knowledge that you gain. Always be willing to get out of your comfort zone, no matter what discipline of music you primarily study, learning a different one will only enhance your abilities as a musician.
